Department of Commerce

The N.C. Department of Commerce is the state's leading economic-development agency, working with local, regional, national and international companies. The department’s mission is to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians.

Department of Commerce, Division of Employment Security

The ESC provides valuable services both for employers and for job seekers. Business Services include assistance with employee recruitment, unemployment insurance issues and Trade Adjustment Assistance, quarterly tax and wage reports and labor market statistics.

Good Work is a nonprofit community development collaborative with a mission to strengthen people and communities through entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

Minority Business Center

The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) is part of a nation-wide group federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) to create wealth in minority communities. The mission is to actively promote the growth and competitiveness of large, medium and small minority business enterprises (MBEs). In NC the center is operated by The Institute (formerly the NC Institute of Minority Economic Development). 

Mountain BizWorks

Mountain BizWorks is in the business of helping small businesses succeed in Western North Carolina. Through financial services, training, consulting and advocacy, Mountain BizWorks helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses and create jobs. Simultaneously, Mountain BizWorks partners with all who advocate for communities where small businesses flourish.

N.C. Center for Nonprofits

The N.C. Center for Nonprofits is a statewide network for nonprofit boards and staff members. The Center provides resources and information to nonprofits, helps nonprofits save time and money, and stay up-to-date on issues facing the nonprofit sector. Resources include a legal compliance checklist, an on-line library with sample templates, policies and carefully selected documents. Pro bono consultations with attorneys, CPAs, HR specialists and marketing experts are available for members. Member Assistance provides personalized assistance on organizational issues. The Center also organizes workshops, forums, and training for staff, boards, and community leaders.
